RESPONSIBILITY

More than just taking
care of yourself

Our choice sets the direction

When we go to the pharmacy for medicines, vitamins, cosmetics or other products, we usually want to feel better, have more energy or boost our immune system. What if, at the same time, we could also help to improve the health of our planet?

What product we put in our cart has a bigger impact than we might think. Every purchase is a vote not only for good quality and a good price, but also for how the product was made, the size of its ecological footprint and what happens to its packaging when we consume it. Simply put, it depends on where the raw materials come from, what processes the manufacturer uses, or whether the packaging ends up in the bin or in sorted waste. We, consumers, have the power to influence what standards companies will consider important. If we choose wisely - such as by favouring local products, recyclable packaging or sustainability-minded brands - we make it clear that we care not only about our health, but also about the planet.

A healthy lifestyle

In balance with nature

Prevention and
generally taking good
care of ourselves are the most
important things

A balanced diet, regular exercise, enough sleep and mental well-being are the keys to lasting good health. Food supplements can then be a great help, if our body needs something extra.

Choose wisely,
according to what your
body needs

The food supplement market is varied, offering many options - from collagen to "immunity boosters". Every product has its place, but it's worth reading the ingredients, comparing and considering what really fits our needs and what we can really use.

Quality has its
value

It pays to choose proven products with quality ingredients and a clear provenance. Even if we buy fewer items, let's choose the ones that will actually benefit us. In addition, by doing do we’ll be encouraging more efficient production with a smaller ecological footprint.

Let's give preference
to brands that we trust
and that act openly

When choosing food supplements, it makes sense to go for manufacturers that have a good reputation, have built trust over a long period of time and actually stand behind their products. Let’s buy from verified places where we can be sure of the provenance and responsible approach.

Recycle and dispose
of waste properly

Even small steps help to protect the environment

Why is there such a push to sort and recycle waste?

It's not about perfection; it's about making every little step count. In 2023, the average amount of municipal waste per EU inhabitant was 511 kg, 48% of which was recycled or composted (Eurostat, 2024). The proportion of waste going to landfill has fallen from 61% to 22% since 1995, showing that recycling is working. However, the total volume of waste is still growing - in 2020 it was around 5.2 tonnes per person in the EU, 1.8 tonnes of which was non-mineral (often consumer) waste (Eurostat, 2024). Recycling is important, but it's not enough on its own - if we don't also focus on preventing waste, we’ll only be trying to catch up with an ever-growing problem.

Don’t throw medicines and food supplements in the bin or flush them down the drain

Some tablets, capsules or syrups contain substances that can end up in water and pose a risk to the environment if they're thrown away or washed down the drain. Return unused products to the pharmacy, where they will dispose of them safely. Preferably in the original packaging to make it clear what product it is.

Sort packaging by material

Plastic bottles (PET), aluminium blisters or paper boxes have their place in the plastic, metal or paper container. Just follow the local rules and help give materials a second chance at life.

Medical devices belong in electrical waste

If we have small electronic medical devices at home (such as thermometers or blood pressure monitors), we should take them to an e-waste collection point where they will be processed in an environmentally-friendly manner.

Let's inform
and educate others

Information is power

Let's take an interest in manufacturers and their approach to responsibility

It’s worth looking at whether the company has a set of values and rules in place that show how it affects the world around it. Nowadays, these principles are often abbreviated as ESG, (E = Environmental, S = Social and G = Governance). In other words, a set of ecological, social and administrative principles.

Let's share our insights – Talk to friends and family about how a healthy lifestyle can also be eco-friendly. Let's patiently explain to children the impact of our behaviour on our health and the health of the planet. Consumer pressure can also change the market.

Personal health starts with responsibility.

An environmentally conscious approach to pharmaceutical products is not about denial, but about conscious choice: what we buy, why we buy it and how we dispose of any leftovers.
